Includes tape recordings of the First International Oceanographic Congress, held at the United Nations headquarters in New York from August 31 to September 12, 1959. The tapes record papers presented, introductions, questions and answer sessions and the Congress summary. Speakers include Gustaf Olof Svante Arrhenius, Sir Edward Crisp Bullard, William Maurice Ewing, Harry Hammond Hess, A.G. Kolesnikov, Gordon Lill, Hakon Mosby, Walter H. Munk, Dixie Lee Ray, Roger Randall Dougan Revelle, and Henry Stommel. Topics include: history of the oceans, populations of the sea, the deep sea, boundaries of the sea, and cycles of organic and inorganic substances in the ocean. The Mohole Project was first announced at this Congress. The Congress was sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, UNESCO, and the Scientific Committee on Ocean Research (SCOR).
